Runway blocked

PA Wellington The wind flipped a singleengined light aircraft on to its back on the Wellington Airport runway as it was preparing to take off shortly after midday yesterday. A Wellington Aero Club spokesman said that the privately owned Cessna 172 was taxi-ing on to the runway and was about to begin its takeoff run to the north when a north-westerly gust flipped it over. The accident took place

outside the crash-fire tender garage. He said that the plane’s sole occupant, Mr W. Pomeroy, was unhurt. The incident disrupted flights in and out of Wellington for some time. While airport officials and crash fire crew were arranging to clear the 800 kg plane from the runway, Air New Zealand had to hold three aircraft on the ground, send another aircraft back, and hold another flight from Hamilton.
