Record Strait swim by girl
A 15-year-old Christchurch swimmer, Elizabeth Horner, became the first woman to swim from the North Island to the South Island mainland yesterday. Rough seas and a strong northerly wind forced her to swim about 11km further than the normal cross-Cook Strait distance, but she still broke the women’s record for the inter-island swim. Miss Horner reached Fisherman’s Bay, below Tory Channel, 11 hours and 34 minutes after leaving from
h Terewhiti Point. Her mother, Mrs Elsie Horner, said last o evening that all previous! 1 swimmers had landed at l 1 Arapawa Island, 20km from! the North island. Herdaugh*!
