Parachutist dies

PA Invercargill A young Te Anau woman was killed yesterday afternoon in a parachuting accident at the Waiau airfield, near Te Anau. She was Judith Ann Swaney, aged 20. The accident happened about 3.30 p.m. when Miss Swaney was making her second free-fall parachute jump. Witnesses on the ground saw Miss Swaney jump from the aircraft and her main parachute open. She then appeared to drop from the parachute and fall to the ground. The police and an ambu-

She was one of several , people in the Te Anau area who had recently taken up parachute jumping under the I guidance of the Canterbury > Sky Divers Group. Interest in the sport was : sparked by an air pageant run by the Te Anau Aero I Club in January. ; Miss Swaney was one of i the more experienced i jumpers in Te Anau, having completed at least five static-line jumps.
