M.P. promises jail protest over land

PA Wellington The Labour member of Parliament for Northern Maori (Dr Bruce Gregory) has said that he is prepared to picket the Bastion Point land development site “and if necessary go to jail” to bring about a settlement. Dr Gregory said that he had told the Orakei Maori Action Committee he supported its confrontation with the Housing Corporation over earthworks on Bastion Point land.

The confrontation was another episode in a long line of Maori land grievances which had alienated Maori and pakeha. Dr Gregory said that he was prepared to work with the committee in any meeting with the Minister of Housing (Mr Quigley) to reach a settlement agreeable to the Ngatiwhatua people. A vociferous few were advocating violence, but he was toally opposed to that course of action, Dr Gregory said.
