We carry on the Way we do, In Ignorance — as if we knew! As Someone said, ‘A Man must live’ — There’s really no Alternative Except — no Need for me to say — At least not Here, and not Today. Because Things go the Way they go, Perhaps we’re luckier, not to know — And luckier than our Leaders who Keep telling Us — as if THEY knew! Our Knowledge being the same as Theirs, Nothing but Temporary Repairs To Ignorance — it fills the Gaps, Good for the Day, the Month perhaps, Before the Facts replace the Fictions, . The Consequences the Predictions. The Month is May, the next is June — July and August following soon — Will the World notice, when We make Our old triennial Mistake, Or give Itself a heedless Shake? — November! Sir, your Nerves are steady? It feels like Guy Fawke’s Day already! Damp Gunpowder below the Hatches, The Fuses, laid — who’s got the Matches? In Ignorance — as if we KNEW! We carry on, the Way we do — Cliff-hanging Year, Cliff-hangers all, What if We fall? Sir, won’t it be the Same, as if We knew? — there wasn't any Cliff!
