third after a break of four lengths, with Be Game coming again for fourth after breaking at the 300 m. Lucky Fred showed speed for fifth, ahead of Lay Off and the firm favourite, Chesapeake, which broke at the straight entra iCv when struggling. Until then Chesapeake had followed the pacemaker. Rosewood Charger qualified for the $4500 Caltex Gold Cup at Nelson next month when she came with a dour stayer’s run to wear down the pacemaker, Kicawave, and beat him by two lengths and a quarter going away. Rosewood Charger’s time for the 3200 m was a smart 4min 13.95. Elrana battled ’ on for third, ahead of Lemrac, which did well after an early break, and Lord Derek, which was among those
badly checked when Orientson stopped badly inside the last 600 m. • Lord Neutrino made no race of the Russley Stakes, following up a stylish win on the course six days earlier. He fought on strongly to beat Lordship’s Lady quite comfortably by half a length, with a short break to Flint Hard, w u; h shaded Powerwork and Tiger Rag. Acco, from Dick Predergast’s team at Chertsey, upset calculations in tue Probationary Handicap. He finished much too well for the firm favourite, King’s Rainbow, won by more than a length.
Mark to Win came on steadily for third, just ahead of The Great Pretender and Lyn Dina. King’s Rainbow was driven by Paul Young, who has gone out to a four-point lead for the Maurice Holmes Trophy. Ricky May is second, three points in front of Michael Heenan.
