Noodlum’s juvenile record lowered by Enterprise

Bv

G. K. YULE

Enterprise settled all arguments, in the South Island at least, about two-year-old supremacy for the season at Addington Raceway last evening. In outclassing the field in the Sires’ Produce Stakes Final he shattered the 2000 m record for his age group by almost two seconds.

Enterprise recorded 2min 33.65, a time more n keep-j ing with free-for-all class pacers. The previous record of 2min 35.4 s was established by Noodlum in 1974. Enterprise will probably have one more start this season, in the $12,000 Sapling Stakes at Ashburton at the end of the month, according to his pa .-owner and trainer, Pat Heffernan, of Moonlight. North Otago.

“We will leave the North Island to Disco Dancer and we’ll take the South Island," said Heffernan when asked whether he would take his stylish colt by Lordship to Alexandra Park for the Juvenile Championships next month.

Enterprise began safely from the second line but not as quickly as Mel’s Boy,<

which settled three places from Peregrine, tiie pacemaker. Peregrine was responsible for the record breaking run when he raced keenly until the straight entrance. Enterprise was six places back and Peter Lhand sprinted him as quickly to third at the 600 m. He waited on Peregrine and Judy’s Girl until the straight entrance, hit the front 200 m out and won as he liked by three lengths and a half. Judy’s Girl 1 old second by a short length from her stablemate. Fantasy Lass, which did •-ell after scrambling at the start. Capri, another filly, was fourth after a gap With Free Win next.

the hot favourite, Mel’s Boy, was beaten 300 m out and finished eighth. As' well as the $3600 from the plac-

ings of Judy’s Girl and Fantasy Lass, the Invercargill owner-trainer, John Henderson. received $lOOO for producing the first filly past the post. The real Light Lord returned to the form expected of him in the Maurice Holmes Stakes, following on two races in which he looked most unlucky. This time Michael de Filippi ran no risk of being blockecd in. forcing almost all of the pace. Light Lord began to loaf in the run home, but when flicked with the whip he found something extra and won handily by three--arts of a length in the smart time of 2min 31.7 s for the 2000 m.

Koau Gold, which lost a length or two after 200 m, came on well to cut Toshack

out of second by half t length, with Vienna Charm close l_, ahead of Wai Eyre, which came strongly from near the rear at the 400;n.

Dundas returned an eyecatching performance when he overcame a handicap of )0m and led for the last 2000 m of the. Caduceus Handicap. He was hotly challenged over the last 1200 m and particularly in the home straight, but he fought back strongly to win by a head from Shabby Tiger. Le Rae got up to shade Lord Brigade and Heather Chief. The win favourite, False Regal, was in the open for a time early, but was handy enough until the 400 m. He dropped out to thirteenth.
