P.N.G. to help line

NZPA Port Moresby Papua New Guinea will make a financial contribution to the ailing Pacific Forum line, according to the Prime Minister; Sir Julius Chan.

Sir Julius did not mention the size of P.N.G.’s grant. However, Government sources say P.N.G is prepared to contribute up to 1 million kina (SNZI.S3 million).

Sir Julius’s announcement follows last month’s statements by the chairman of the lino, Mr Harry Julian, that the line was being “Crippled” by the unwillingness of island governments to meet their financial commitments.

Sir Julius said yesterday that failure by Papua New Guinea to make a contribution to the Forum Line would “draw criticism of the country’s real commitments to thO line and to Island countries of the SOuth Pacific.”

“WO wanted the shipping line, we got it, and now we must do everything to prevent it from sinking,” he said.
