Christchurch’s Horticulture Hall was the colourful scene of the biggest chrysanthemum show in Christchurch for 20 years when a record 800 entries competed for regional' and national awards at the week-end.
The chrysanthemum show was run by the Canterbury Horticultural Society and the National Chrysanthemum Society, and drew a big number of. Interested spectators. International chrysanthemum judges from'Britain and the United States said that the standard of the blooms was excellent.
The United States National Chrysanthemum Society gave Leo Clark, of Christchurch, a special award for his vase of “Beautiful Lady” blooms, which also won the premier national award for anemone centred blooms.
National premier awards: Champion bloom, Leo Clark’s large exhibition bloom “Shir-
ley Champion,” Clark also won Chrysanthemum Singles, Exhibition incurved, Medium Exhibition, Best White, Red, Pink and any other colour, premier awards. Fantasy vase and Fantasy Single awards went to Leita Walker of Auckland. B. J. Glassey, Ashburton, won premier awards for Sprays and Reflexed Decorative. Mrs Connie Weakley, Christchurch, won the Incurving Decorative section. and John Walker, Auckland, took away the Pompon class. Canterbury Horticultural Society premier awards: Champion bloom went to B. J. Glassey, Ashburton, for his vase of Sprays, “Bonni Jean.” He also won awards for Medium Exhibition, Medium Exhibition Incurved, and Decorative. F. G. Weakley and Mrs Weakley won premier awards for Large Exhibition Incurved, Fantasy and Exhibition Singles.
