Shock for Manawatu

PA Palmerston North Manawatu received the shock of its life from a rejuvenated Wanganui rugby team in Palmerston North yesterday before finally winning the representative fixture, 20-18. J . Wanganui was beaten 31-0 by Taranaki on Anzac Day, but gave the lethargic Manawatu forwards a lacing in the first half and led, 9-4.

Then the four thousandplus crowd was treated to ten minutes of Manawatu’s best as Manawatu went through to a 13-4 lead, but Wanganui would not lie down and a try by the wing, Kelvin Chase, gave it a lead of 1816. It took a fine individual effort by Manawatu’s left wing, Jimmy Bryson to get

the national champion home by .20 points to 18, but it was not an impressive effort. Scorers: Manawatu 20 (Jim Bryson, Ken Grainger, and Mark Finlay tries; Finlay a conversion and two penalties), Wanganui 18 (Kelvin Chase a try, Kerry O’Hara a dropped goal, Glen Willacy three penalties and a conversion).
