Easy win for Donald
PA Auckland The national motor rally champion, Jim Donald, drove to a relatively easy victory in the Cibie Lights rally over, the week-end. By the end of the 660 km rally, Donald, driving an Escort RS 1800, had built up a 71-second lead over the second place-getter, Paul Adams, who was also driving an Escort. Adams drove particularly well through the dust following Donald’s car to be within
17s of Donald by the start of the last special stage, but a spark plug lead fell off during the last stage and he lost valuable time. Third place went to Alan Mitchell in another Escort after a battle with Tony Teesdale, who had been having clutch problems. Another Escort, driven by the thirteenth seed, Mark Parsons, came in at fifth place. Morrie Chandler drove consistently to bring his less powerful Lancer EX sixth.
