Old scores for Cook to settle
By
JOHN FRIDD
The voluble Aucklander, Reg Cook, will attempt to settle some old scores between racing drivers and rally drivers in the Ashley Forest at the week-end. Cook, fresh from winning this season’s Shellsport 2litre saloon racing title, will drive his Sanyo Datsun Sunny in the rich Dunlop rallysprint against some of New Zealand’s top drivers and rally cars. Cook has modified the car’s suspension to make it better handle gravel surfaces and will be an unknown quantity in the $4500 event. Top contenders for the $l3OO first prize will be Tony Teesdale (Tokoroa) and Paul Adams (Auckland), both in
powerful Escort RSlBOOs. Teesdale won last year’s Riverhead Forest televised rallysprint but Adams won the 1979 national rally championship in an Escort, so picking a winner is difficult. Trevor Crowe, of Christchurch, will also campaign an Escort RS and could be a finalist. Other leading drivers include Howard Collier (Auckland, Mazda RX3), Mark Jennings (Wellington, Escort RS), Mike Limbrick (Auckland, Mazda RX3), Hugh Armstrong (Masterton, Escort RS) and David Brown (Timaru, Datsun 120 Y 2.0). Competition will be run over two days and parts of the event, run by the Rallies and Trials Enthusiasts Club, will be televised live.
