Long sequence ends

For the first time in 20 years Canterbury has not included a full-back among its All Black trial nominations. Conspicuously absent from the list of nine names is the All Black full-back of 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1980, Richard Wilson. Nor is Robbie Deans, the man who has replaced Wilson as the Canterbury full-back, on the list either. Before Wilson came to the fore, Fergie McCormick had, since 1960, been a regular Canterbury full-back nomination. The nine names on this year's list are Randal Scott (wing), Kieran Keane (second five-eighths), Wayne Smith (first five-eighths), Gary Barkle and Steve Scott (both half-backs), Don Hayes (flanker), Graeme Higginson (lock), Pat O’Byrne and Murray Davie (both props). The only new nomination is the rugged Marist prop, O’Byrne, and, if anything, the selectors, Messrs Gerald Wilson and Neil Cornelius, appear to have kept the list short. They could well have put forward the two junior All Blacks of last year, Victor Simpson and Dale Atkins, without causing any ripples and they might also have done Vance Stewart a favour by letting the national selectors know that he is on the comeback trail. At his own request John Ashworth has not been nom-j

inated and this almost certainly means that his All Black career is over. Ashworth still has hopes of playing for Canterbury later this season, but commitments to his Sefton farm will probably leave him with little time for any other big games. Perhaps befitting its station — it beat Canterbury last year — Mid-Canterbury has put forward more names than canterbury, 10 as against nine. In all, a total of 140 players have been nominated for the trials — the selectors have asked for two games — to be played in Wellington on may 23. The All Black selectors, Messrs Peter Burke (convener), Bryce Rope and Tiny Hill, will name the four sides for the two trials on Sunday, May 10. FULL-BACKS B. W. Codlin (Counties). K. J.
