Forestry pledge

PA ' \ Wellington

A Labour government would phase out logging in North Island native forests within its first term of office, said Labour’s Shadow Minister for the Environment, Mr M. K. Moore. -.' There had been widespread and-justifiable criticism of the Forest Service proposals to resume Togging in the Pureora forest Park, the last remaining virgin forest in the North Island, he said. ■

Mr Moore said it was clear the Forest Service intended ‘Taking a good bite” at the Pureora forest under a draft plan for the area. Since World-War 11, 85 per cent of the West Taupo forests had been logged or cleared, and the Forest Service intended to continue in this vein. ? > "This forest, which contains the greatest concentration of rare and endangered species in the North Island, and the remaining native forests, must be saved by phasing out logging as soon as possible,” Mr Moore said.
