Referees on ‘pile-ups’

PA Hamilton New Zealand rugby referees at their annual conference at Hamilton yesterday decided that every effort must be made this season to minimise dangerous “pileups” It was agreed there were too many breaches of law 19 concerning lying on or near the ball and this must be strictly enforced. Delegates were asked to return to their various unions

and make sure publicity was I given to this resolution through clubs and coaches. They agreed that the law, as written, was very explicit and simple. To referee consistently this aspect of the game it was essential referees were on the spot to see the law was observed. If it was not, referees must immediately impose the penalty. Strict application would enable the elimination of many “pile-ups.”
