Top athletes in Oceania team

PA Auckland Twelve New Zealanders, including John Walker (1500 m and Rod Dixon (10,000 m have been named in the Oceania team to contest the World Cup athletic meeting in Rome in September. The World Cup is held every second year with representative teams from Oceania (Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands), Asia, the United States, The Americas (Canada, the Caribbean and South American countries), the Soviet. Union, East Germany, the Rest of Europe, and Africa, competing.

The other New Zealanders in the 49-strong Oceania team announced by New Zealand’s Oceania representative, Arthur Eustace,

are Robin Tait (discus), Mike O’Rourke (javelin), Kieran McKee) pole ’vault), Shane Downey (4 x 100 - relay), Dianne Rodger (1500 m Lorraine Moller (3000 m Wendy Brown (4 x 100 m relay), Andrea Wade (4 x 100 m relay), and Terry Yaxley and Barbara Moore (travelling reserves).

Because of the large number of withdrawals from the last Oceania World Cup team, the selectors this time have decided to name a number of non-travelling reserves and even several reserves for the non-travell-ing reserves.

The team will leave about two weeks before the World Cup and have three warm-up meetings in Italy: The World Cup, in Rome’s 1960 Olympic Stadium, is scheduled for September 4, 5 and 6.
