N.Z. loses to Malaysia

NZPA-Reuter Singapore New Zealand lost, 0-2, to Malaysia in its second match in a four-nation hockey tournament, at the Jalan Besar Stadium, in Singapore, yesterday. Two first-half goals by Poon Fook Loke enabled Malaysia to win despite a strong attacking play by New Zealand. The New Zealanders started off aggressively but after the fifteenth minute, domination of the first-half switched to Malaysia. Poon’s first goal was in the seventeenth minute off a pass from Avtar Singh. In the thirtieth minute, Poon made it 2-0 after a solo run from mid-field which drew out two New Zealand defenders and the goal-keeper, Graeme Sligo.

New Zealand again dominated play in the second half, but because of poor co-ordi-nation among its forwards, and fine goalkeeping by Ahmad Fradzil, who saved three dose goals, was unable to score. The New Zealanders won four penalty corners in the. last 10 minutes of play but made, poor use of them. A crestfallen New Zealand coach, Brian Maunsell, said after the match: “We had our chances but failed to use them.” In an earlier match, the favourite, Pakistan, beat Singapore, 3-1, for its second straight win. It will meet New Zealand for its final match today, while Malaysia, in second place, plays Singapore.' ■
