Motor ‘not assessed’

An electric motor used by the Christchurch electric vehicle company, N.E.E.V., Ltd, has not been assessed for its “acceptability” by the University of Canterbury, according to a senior lecturer at the university. The Nelson maker of the motor, Geo. Higgins, Ltd, was reported yesterday as saying that the motor had been sent to the university and had been “accepted” there.

Mr D. J. Byers, a senior lecturer in electrical engineering, said yesterday that no assessment'of the ‘‘acceptability” of the motor had been made by or at the university. The motor bad been tested by an independent consulting engineer, using the university’s facilities. But the university had in no way been responsible for the tests, Mr Byers said. The tests had been called for by the Energy Research and Development Committee, which has just released a report on the feasibility of electric vehicles in New Zealand.

However, the report contains no comment on the “acceptability” or otherwise of the Nelson-made motor.
