The former New Zealand high jump champion, Karen Whimp, of Auckland, in high spirits yesterday at Christchurch Airport. Now aiming for new heights in the “Miss Universe-New Zealand” contest, Miss Whimp is in Christchurch with 17 other North Island girls to prepare for the final in the James Hay Theatre next Wednesday. The fair-haired Miss Whimp won the New Zealand women’s high jump title four times between 1976 and 1979. She was third this year but holds second ranking with her best leap this summer of 1.76m.
