Official report, prices

All crossbred wools were dearer on the first day of the Christchurch wool sale yesterday, according ltd the official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the Wool Board and the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association. Of tlie total offering of 35,889 bales for the two days, 16.846 bales were on offer from two brokers. A fairly widespread, buying pattern prevailed on crossbred fleece and better-style Halfbred. The principal buyers were Eastern and Western' Europe supported by the Far East and New Zealand mills. Compared with the Invercargill sale last Friday, the market for crossbred wools could be quoted as follows:— fine and medium, up to 21 per cent dearer; strong fleece and second-shear, is sellers’ favour; lambs’ wool skirtings, and oddments, inclined insellers’ favour. The market for finer wools compared with the Dunedin sale on March 26. Merino- was firm; medium Halfbred in buyers’ favour; strong Halfbred firm; extra strong Halfbred in sellers’ favour; and Halfbred skirtings and oddments firm. The Wool Board gave substantial support to the market, bidding on 11,166 bales or 66.3 per cent of the offering and. having 3285 bales, or 19.5 per cent, sold or passed to- it. The report siad that the wool in the sale came mainly from Canterbury and Marlborough, with good quantities of crossbred fleece from Nelson and the West i Coast. Most of the fleece showed discolouration and many lots were cotted, which is fairly normal for an April sale. Lambs’ wool made up the bulk of the offering, some attractive lots being available. However, a few of the good-

style lots were discounted because of lack of attention, by growers to removal of discoloured' portions. The following is the official range of prices issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association:—
