The Wizard.

Sir,—There are two selfproclaimed wizards in this country. The Christchurch Wizard is a tenuous link with bygone days when life was rendered fascinating by its mystery — a time when most people were poorer, but happier on a family and community basis, whose privacy had not yet been invaded by an

army of officials who seek to reduce humanity to a catalogue of facts and figures. The majority of us may now have more money to spend, a substantial part of which is spent on escapism from the society which has produced it — whether this be alcohol, drugs, or crime and sex-splashed cinema and TV screens. These unsatisfactory illusions have to be paid for. Our Wizard is not only free, he does no damage, except perhaps to the feelings of inflexible authority. The other wizard will probably’ be discredited in November.— Yours, etc., ■ J. E. RYAN. March 30, 1981.
