Church burnt down
PA Wellington Pastor Bill Burt says his congregation is putting behind it Saturday’s fire which destroyed the Christian Revival Centre in Vivian Street, Wellington. “It has been a terrible loss,” he said. “But we have to put that behind us and I am trying to lead the others on that. Financially, it appears we have enough money to rebuild and that is what we will try to do.” Fire-safety officers were yesterday attempting to establish the cause of the fire, which was not considered suspicious. Wellington’s chief fire officer, Mr R. Mills, said firemen had tried to stop the fire from spreading to the church, but the heat generated by the fire in Mouldings and Finishings, Ltd, had been too great, “We were very disappointed the church went but the fire load in the factory was too great,” he said. One firemen was injured. Fireman G. Read, working on the extension ladder 25 metres above the fire, was burned on the face, but was not seriously injured. Mr Mills said about 70 firemen manning eight pumps, two hose layers, a turntable ladder, a snorkel engine, and the salvage ten der were at the fire.
