Complaints about appliances
PA Wellington Domestic items and household appliances, plus potentially dangerous toys, made up 60 per cent of the complaints and inquiries handled by the Product Safety Council in its first year of operation. This was announced by the managing director of the Accident Compensation Corporation, Mr j. L. Fahy. Sports equipment accounted for 9 per cent, tools 15 per cent, and poisonous substances 6 per cent. The balance of 10 per cent was
made up of miscellanous items. The council was established on March 20, 1980, by the Accident Compensation Corporation. ‘‘lts formation has proved well justified to dote? Mr Fahy said. He said that in view of the widespread concern shown about injuries to children caused by potentially dangerous toys," the corporation had funded’ the Standards Association to develop a standard for toy safety, including test requirements.
