Protection for rights of fossickers?
p A Nelson The Waimea County Council will investigate whether it can get mining rights to preserve stretches of rivers for use by weekend gold fossickers. The suggestion was made by the council’s chairman, Mr M. J. Thorn, during a discussion on mining in the county.
He knew of at least three kilometres of the Motueka River which had been claimed for mining and this was worrying both hobbyists and local landowners. “f. had a telephone call from a ratepayer who had spent a lot of money on river bank protection then suddenly he found a lot of white pegs along one stretch,” Mr Thorn said. Cr G. W. Thurlow said that as well as the Motueka River, rivers such as the Howard and the Mangles were important to week-end enthusiasts.
The council decided that the County Clerk (Mr A. A. Aubrey) should investigate the feasibility of getting mining licences to protect parts of civers-
