Prince to see deer caught
Timaru reporter
D e e r-c a t c h i n g by Hughes helicopter will be demonstrated to Prince Charles when he visits Haldon station, Fairlie, during his visit to South Canterbury next month. Mrs B. J. Innes, of Haldon, said yesterday that the Prince would see the method by which deer were caught by helicopter.
There were now about 800 red deer in highfenced enclosures, said Mrs Innes. There would be no “window dressing” to mark Prince Charles’s visit. Station staff would he engaged on everyday farm work — working in the yards with sheep, drafting, and tagging cattle.
Prince Charles, who will tour Haldon on April 8 after an overnight stay at Mount Cook, will see Hereford cattle and the New Zealand breeding group, Genepool. A highlight of the Prince’s visit would be an inspection of the highly fertile Booroola sheep, a type of Merino, said Mrs Innes. The sheep would be grazing, with possibly some rams penned up. Afterwards, Prince Charles will continue round the rest of the station, a showplace for tourists, before having lunch there? Mrs Innes said that the Prince would cross Lake Ber.more by jet boat to inspect the Ohau power proect.
Afterwards Prince Charles will meet residents of Twizel and schoolchildren in the township before leaving by air for Manapouri and Te Anau.
