Butcher stars for England
NZPA-Reuter Montserrat Roland Butcher produced the type of matchwinning innings for which he was chosen for the Caribbean tour as he steered the England cricketers to a five-wicket win over the Leeward Islands. The Barbados-born Butcher hit 10 fours and a six in an unbeaten 77, easily his best knock of the tour, to give some convictiomto a patchy England performance against an Islands side missing both Viv Richards and Andy Roberts.
England was set a modest 174 for victory in about five hours, but ran ipto plenty of problems before Butcher’s innings blossomed in the afternoon session. The first three wickets were lost for only 45, and continued to struggle after lunch until Butcher and David Bairstow came together with 65 still wanted. Butcher, whose previous highest score of the tour was 43, dominated a sixthwicket stand which carried England to its second tour win.
