Adult ewes fetch good prices at Culverden
Tile ewe fair at Culverden on Thursday was much the best this season for adult ewes. - At earlier fairs this year adult sheep were hard to sell, unless their quality was first rate, but at Culverden there was a demand for most types of adult ewes, the best of which made some good prices. The adult ewe yarding was down from 10,548 last year to 8763 whichi possibly accounted for some of the tone of the sale. The strongest demand was for sheep with a breeding reputation, which has been the case at every fair this year. But, for a change, there was plenty of support for lighter ewes. The best price for old ewes was $23.20 for 585 annual draft Corriedales from A.F.S. and W. H. Rutherford (Montrose). Last year the best price was $27. Hitchin Hills, Ltd (Hawarden), sold 303 annual draft Corriedales at $22.20. Most four-year ewes were between $15.10 and $18.60 while five-year ewes made from $13.50 to The S sale of 5635 two-tooths (7490 last year) was not spectacular bqt most vendors would have been more than happy with their clearances.
Taking into account the dlsi tance of sale from many buyers’ properties, most . two-tooths . would have been slightly ahead of recent Addington rates. Two vendors were very promi- . nent throughout the sale. D. R. Fraser (Hawarden) topped the market, selling 110 Corrledales at $27.60, and he also : had an excellent sale of his rei maining 461 head, which made from $21.60 to „ „ . A.F.S. and W. H. Rutherford ■ sold 954 Corrledales between . $24.60 and $27. Other two-tooth sales were made between $2O and $24 but . the bulk of the Corriedale and Halfbreds were between $18.20 and $22.10. ; Much- of the buying power came from the Amur! and Ohe- ; vlot districts but the Kirwee, . Darfleld, and Mid-Canterbury I areas were also represented. ; Sales, Corrledales unless otherwise stated, were.— TWO-TOOTHS > Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd, i sold on account of.— Hhchin Hills (Hawarden), 70 at $lB, 142 at $19.40, 103 at $16.60: Reed Bros (The • Grampians), 113 at $23.20, ■ 133 at $18.20; S.
