PA Wellington An executive member of the Auckland Trades Council Mr A. O’Neill, will oppose Mr J. P. Anderton for the presidency of the Labour Party at the party’s annual conference in Wellington from May 11 to 14. Nominations for party ports were announced by the party’s secretary, Mr J. A. Wvbrow, yesterday. Mr O’Neill is a trade-union organiser, an executive memRegional Council, and a reber of the Auckland Labour gional representative, of the New Zealand Labour Council. ■ Sixty nominations have been received for the 15 positions which will go to ballot at the conference. The senior vice president, Mr S. McCaffley, will be reelected unopposed but the junior vice-president, Mr D. Duggan has six contenders for the position he has held
i for two years. Among the ‘ nominees are a former Post ■ Office Association secretary, ■ Mr I. E. Reddish, and Mr • F. Gerbic, the only member - of Parliament nominated for 1 any post on the council. The i Tasman electorate chairman, Mr L. Sutherland, is also ; among the nominees.
More than half of the 23 nominations received for the five posts on the central executive have trade-union association. The number of women offering themselves for election is well down compared with previous years, only three nominations having been received.
