Win to Avon crew

Having to borrow a boat did not seem to worry the Avon premier coxless four unduly in the Auckland provincial rowing championships at Lake Karapiro on Sunday. In an encouraging final competitive try-out before next week’s national regatta at Karapiro the four of Steve Donaldson (stroke), Les O’Connell, George Keys, and Mark Meates recorded a time of 6min 21.8 s to win its race from Waikato No. 2 and Wairau. The crew must have a chance of regaining the national title Avon held in 1978 and 1979, although the speedy Otago , No.. 1 four (which did not contest the Auckland regatta) will be among those issuing strong challenges.

Avon was not quite so successful in the other premier events, getting third places in the coxed fours and single sculls and finishing out of the major placings in the eights. However, another Christchurch club, Union, was successful in the lower classes. The intermediate coxed four of Dale Maher, Bob Davidson, Barry Scott, and Dave Handisides fulfilled the high hopes placed in it with a win from Auckland University and Waitemata. In the lightweight coxless fours Avon and Canterbury finished second and third respectively behind the winning Te Awamutu crew which contained the former Avon oarsman, John Smyth.-
