Tipperary impresses with Addington win
By
G. K. YULE
Tipperary emerged as a possible contender for much higher honours when he was successful in the Town Hall Stakes at Addington Raceway last evening.
The colt by Noodlum from Squire’s Hanover had to be good to win even though his time was not particularly fast. He began best, but was hotly challenged for the lead from the 1900 m by Special Appeal, which passed him with 1300 m left. Then Young Tala went to the front soon after. Peter Jones pulled Tipperary out. - approaching the straight entrance. He had to
work hard to head the stablemates, Special Appeal and Young Tala, and then had to withstand a determined late challenge from Ginger Creek, driven by Derek Jones. Tipperary took the decision by a nose. Sierra Nevada, wide on the home tum when improving from towards the rear, was third half a length from Ginger Creek. Young Tala and Special Appeal tired over the last
few metres to fill the next two placings. The 2/3 favourite, Haughty Lord, was forced wide early, improved in the middle part, and tired to eighth. Dryden Amanda, after being three wide in the rush for positions over the first 800 m of the Christchurch Handicap, showed courage to beat Gay Lopez. Lord Brigade, given a splendid run, held on for
third, ahead of Chileno, which looked unlucky not to work clear. False Regal gave Peter Jones another win when he came too strongly from well back in the field starting the run home to catch Le Rae 15m out and beat her by a short length. Dundas, after appearing to be struggling in the middle stages, showed gameness to take third, ahead of Bachelor iSinger and Castle Hanover.
