Mabel Howard Place amenities
Sir, — On visiting the people in Mabel Howard Place recently, I was appalled to find that they do not have a community centre. Church units do provide this amenity, so why not the council? Inquiries revealed that council policy provides centres in new, but not old, complexes, and available money renovates old complexes, psychological health is not a priority. The people to whom I spoke at
Mabel Howard Place want, and need, such a centre, and certainly I would not enjoy living in any community where provision for a small library, chapel, or communal lounge which could double as any of these, is not present, particularly were I partly incapacitated as many of these people are- Are this city’s leaders prepared for this to continue, and for these units for the elderly to be mere way stations on the road to the inevitable, or are they concerned enough to look again at their priorities? — Yours, etc., P. ADMORE. February 10,1981.
