Four big. gum trees on a road reserve at Charteris Bay were felled yesterday at the request of a landowner building on an adjacent . section. The stand of trecu is shown before the four trees were , felled (top) and after (lower); The Mount Herbert County Council had given permission for 12 trees on the road reserve land to be felled because they
were considered dangerous, but about 10 young gum trees were left standing. - The owner of land next to the reserve sought permission to have the trees felled because he is build- . ing on his property/ The request caused a minor controversy, at Charteris Bay when a pro-perty-owner, Mr I. G. Clark, opposed the felling because he said that the
trees were a skyline feature on the foreshore and added character to the bay. \v .': Mr Clark had said last ; month that he would try J to gather signatures •: of .. Charteris - 'Bay . residents who wanted the trees to remain. He Sdld not physically. obstruct the felling yesterday., ' A spokesman for the Mount Herbert County Council said that a letter
from Mr Clark bearing the signatures of about three residents of Charteris Bay : had -been received but a formal petition had not been sent in. ,Mrs, Katrina Gardiner, the County Chairman, said . that-the council’s decision to approve the trees’ being felled had been unanimous. .. . .“I regard the trees as a bit scrubby,” she said.
