Lietzke wins Bob Hope Classic
NZPA-Reuter Palm Springs (California) Bruce Lietzke led all the way as he won the 90-hole Bob Hope Desert Classic golf tournament by two strokes over Jerry Pate at Palm Springs, California. The 29-year-old Texan collected $50,000 from the total purse of $304,000. Lietzke had a three under par 69 for his final round and finished with a tournament record total of 25 under par 335.
He broke the record set in 1977 when Rik Massengale won with a 22 under par
score. Lietzke was second that year. '
Pate started the round two strokes behind the leader and on three occasions he pulled to within one shot but could get no closer with a 69. His 23 under par 337 was good for $29,700. David Edwards birdied the last hole for a 71 to finish alone in third place at 341, while Bill Rogers, J. C. Snead and D. A. Weibring were tied for fourth at 342.
Jack Nicklaus had a 69 as he made his first start of the year and finished at 349, good for a tie for twentyeighth place.
