Demonstration at Games: two arrested
Banner-waving HART supporters made a brief demonstration at the World Veteran Games at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday morning. It was timed to coincide with the appearance, of the president of the South African Masters’ Association, Danie Burger, in a heat of the M 45 400 m hurdles soon after 10 a.m. The demonstrators, shouting slogans and “Burger go home,” made their appearance opposite the start of the 400 m hurdles race; The group of about 20 was quickly led away by. the police. An attempt by another
demonstrator to disrupt the race by tipping over a hurdle in Burger’s lane was prevented by alert policemen. A demonstrator, who stood in Burger’s lane was also taken away by the police before he could interfere with the race. The disturbance did not appear to upset the Concentration of Burger, who has come to New Zealand as a United States citizen. He won his heat in 65.085. Two Christchurch men were arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour after- the demonstration. The men, aged 29 and 56, will appear in the District Court on Wednesday.
