Butter price up 11c
PA Wellington The price of a 500 g pack of butter rises today by He to 98c. The chairman of the Dairy Board, Mr K. F. Mehrtens, said that the increase was the result of continuing cost increases in New Zealand. It was necessary to recover from the New Zealand market a larger proportion of tire value of cream used in butter making than was now the case.
The new price of butter recovered only about 90 per cent of the value of the milkfat used in its production. Previously the Government had met the difference in full but now this fell on the dairy farmer. The prices paid by the New Zealand consumer remai n e d substantially below the average export return. Dairy farmers’ incomes in real terms were also expected to be below those of last year.
