Suprise win for Central

PA Napier Auckland lost its unbeaten record in the Shell Cup cricket series when Central Districts scored an impressive 60-run win at McLean Park, Napier, yesterday. Central Districts, the Shell Trophy leaders, scored 207 in their 50 overs and maintained pressure on Auckland in the field to dismiss it for only 147 with six overs and two balls remaining.

The middle-order batsman Wayne Hodgson hit out for 59 runs to lead Central Districts to a respectable total and gain the man of the match award. Hodgson OTruck only two fours in his 85-minute innings but also crashed a

huge six out of the ground. The opening batsmen Robert Anderson (39) and Andrew Jones (27) played more controlled innings to give Central a good start and Jock Edwards was relatively subdued in compiling 36. Auckland made a good start in its chase for the runs, with the opener Austin Parsons particularly severe on any loose balls. But Central Districts gradually tightened up the game and the Auckland batsmen were forced into desperation shots as the run rate slipped further behind.

The left-arm pace bowler Murray Jamieson capitalised on the situation by taking four for 11.
