Ritchie unlikely to play today

Bryan Ritchie’s devotion to duty has probably cost him his place in ‘the Canterbury Shell Trophy cricket team which will meet Wellington at Lancaster Park today. Although the Canterbury squa*/ has been extremely busy — yesterday’s one-day match at Timaru was for some of the players their thirteenth day in action in the last 15 — Ritchie decided on Saturday morning to have his usual training run. In taking evasive action when threatened with injury by a motor-car, he injured a

groin muscle and could not play in yesterday’s Shell Cup game. He will have a fitness tes r this morning, but the prospects for him are not good.

Wellington’s squad will be reinforced by the return of Richard Reid, who was not available for yesterday’s game.

The match is a particularly important one for both sides. Wellington and Canterbury share third place in the competition. The top team, Central Districts, and its nearest rival Auckland will meet in Napier.
