Maranui easy water polo winners

By

RAY CAIRNS

There was none of the tension and drama usually associated with the last day of the water polo tournament at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Wednesday. Maranui already had the tours nament won, and with it a useful lead in the New Zealand men’s club championship. The only point at issue was second place. Newmarket tied that up when it beat Beckenham-

Sockburn by a goal in their morning match. e With Newmarket going on y to beat Hutt as well, and i Beckenham-Sockburn win- - ning its local derby with I Wharenui, the combined club - thus needed to beat Maranui s in the final game to win 1 second on goal average. But - the powerful Wellington side - completed a clean sweep j that few would have expected before the tournaj ment, and finished with an - impressive 20 points from a

possible 24. Oddly, three of those four points were dropped to Wharenui (the other to Newmarket). On any count, one of Newmarket’s Americans, Rick Sherbourne, had to be considered the player of the tournament. He scored an incredible 49 goals, and had only eight major fouls recorded against him. The next best goal tallies were by John Davie (Beck-enham-Sockburn, 34), Chris Jarvis (Maranui, 28), Rich-

ard Clark (25) and Ross Paterson (Maranui, 25). Points, with goals for and against in parenthesis, are: Maranui 20 (225-86), Newmarket 13 (126-129), Becken-ham-Sockburn 11 (119-118), Hutt 9 (112-127) and Wharenui 7 (77-97). Newmarket 12 (R. Sherbourne 6, P. Montgomerie 2. A. Chaney 2, M. A. Grooby, R. Allen), Beck-enham-Sockburn 11 (M. A. Har ding 3, J. R. Davie 3, G. Barry 2, S. A. Ward 2, L. J. Marshall). Hutt 11 (J. A. Conroy 4, R.
