Police image on TV
Sir, — I make a plea to Television New Zealand, for the removal from our screens of “Chips” and “The Dukes of Hazzard,” on the following grounds:— The police are continually portrayed as incompetent buffoons, solving cases virtually by luck alone. The atrocious manners of, and the methods used by the stars, would not be tolerated by any reputable law enforcement agency. The driving of police vehicles as depicted in both series, surely constitutes dangerous driving, and would never be condoned by any police department. The multiple crashes, as depicted in “Chips” exist only in the scriptwriters’ imagination. The drawn-out chases, particularly in “Chips.” where the powerful motor-cycles used could easily overhaul most of the vehicles concerned but do not. This steady diet of abysmal driving, must surely rub off on the motoring idiots who form a large percentage of this country’s drivers. — Yours, etc.. P. R. HOSKING. December 29, 1980.
