Cathedral 'nuclearfree’ zone

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament will be declared a nuclear weaponfree zone. The declaration will be mad* during a special Mass in the cathedral as part of the World Day of Peace on New Year’s Day. The Mass, which will start at 9 a.m., has been organised by the Christchurch Catholic Commission for Justice and Development. The celebrant and preacher will be the Rev. John Curnow.

People will be invited to declare themselves and their property as nuclear weaponfree. Mr M. Donoghue, of the peace committee of the commission, said that it was hoped “that such positive opposition can spread from people to streets, districts, and institutions.”

Pope John Paul II has chosen freedom as the theme for 1981, and has invited all people to reflect on the nature of true freedom and its links with peace. The World Day of Peace has been organised each year since 1968.
