Canterbury’s Brabin Cup hopes fade
Special correspondent Dunedin Canterbury was struggling yesterday at the end of the first day of its second round, match in. the Brabin Cup tournament at Taieri near Dunedin. Central Districts won the toss and batted on a placid wicket. Canterbury toiled hard to break the stubborn Central batting. It batted consistently and only a marathon consecutive 34 overs.;-and five wicket;s -by Chris O’Malley, rind four wickets by David Boyle, put my restriction on the Central scoring. Canterbury started its innings confidently. Alan Blyth and David Kerr batted well, and with the Central attack at their mercy, Blyth was foolishly run out attempting a suicide second run.
From then wickets fell regularly through a mixture of poor batting and running. David Boyle was caught by the wicket-keeper in his pads attempting , a back-cut; Mark Priest was , lbw without playing a shot; and after hesitating Jerry' McDonald was run out. Mark Chamberlain attacked immediately he went to the wicket and with clean hitting scored 37. In the last two overs two more rash shots . two -wickets, including Chamberlain who mistimed a hook on the fourth ball of the last over. • The wicket is beginning to take sharp spin and a result is likeh’ today. Central Districts 233/8 (T. Rohrs 26. M. Cooper 37, G. Pease 32, G. McKenzie 38. D. Kirk 29 not out; C. O’Malley 5/95, D. Bovle 4/53) met Canterbury 145/9 (D. Kerr 27, A. Blyth 39, M Chamberlain 37; G. McKenzie 2/21, M. Melthus 2/18).
