Increase in handling rate of containers
PA Dunedin The container-handling rate at the Port Chalmers container terminal, which is already one of the highest in the world, continues to increase, according to the latest report from the Waterfront Industry Commission.
The report covers the year to the end of September and shows that the ship-exchange rate of containers at Port Chalmers was 39.22 an hour, a 35.9 per cent increase on the 28.87 containers an hour recorded in the previous year. Port Chalmers also showed the greatest rate of increase followed by Wellington, which now handles 28.37 containers an hour compared with 24.61 in the previous year (a 15.3 per cent increase). Auckland handles 25.82 containers an hour compared with 24.27 in the previous year (6.4 per cent more), and Lyttelton 21.02 compared with 20.68 (1.6 per cent more). In spite of the increased handling rate the number of containers handled during the year at Port Chalmers fell to 49,449 from 52,340 in the previous year. *, -. ; • The biggest container port was Auckland, at
which 88,648 container# were handled (91,986 in the previous year). Lyttelton was the only | port at which more con* tainers were handled: ' 23,332 compared with 22,052 during the previous 12 months. A total of 234,824 containers was handled in the four container ports, 4.7 per cent less than in the previous year. The report says that the proportion of cargo | carried by conventional i ships recovered to reach the highest rate for .three! years. During the year { three million tonnes of .. conventional cargo and 2.5 i million tonnes of container cargo were carried while I 2.2 million tonnes were . transferred from roll-on ships. j A section of the report ;• that covers the four • months to the end of Sep* tember shows a small increase in the number of ‘ containers handled at the four New Zealand ports. Cargo increased by 2.2 per cent to 847,490 tonnes and movements were 4 per cent up at 80,833. . The commission said • that the ship-exchange rates achieved, particularly at Port Chalmers, reflected the benefit of “multi-crane operations.” ' -
