Athlete’s anti-tour resignation
A New Zealand champion athlete, A.W. Mahan, has resigned from the Albion Rugby Club because of the proposed Springbok tour. Mr Mahan is diocesan secretary in Christchurch. He holds records in the IJOm and 400 m hurdle events. He has resigned from the club because it is affiliated to the New Zealand . Rugby Union, which invited the Springboks. Mr Mahan believes the Rugby Union did not consider the effects the tour would have in New Zealand. He said that the union in issuing; the invitation also disregarded the larger issues of human dignity and justice.
