14 more nurses
More nurses will be employed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
Because of staff shortages and the closing of Essex Maternity Hospital. the board has saved money in its staffing account and this will be transferred to employing more staff. The Christchurch Hospital orthopaedic department will benefit most: 14 more nurses and two aides and a ward clerk will be taken on. These are additional to the 28 extra staff for The Princess Margaret Hospital and Christchurch Hospital announced on Monday.
Mr T. M. McGuigan told the board yesterday that he was concerned that the board seemed to be “tinkering*’ with what was a big problem caused by the shortage of nurses.
Positive means must be found to increase the number of nurses while not reducing the number of patients admitted to hospital, he said.
Mr W, L. F. Utley said that the board should guard itself against the problems of overcrowding in wards. This could lead to Infection problems.
