‘Family Life’ support
The Christchurch Cityd Council ' will support the J Canterbury Family Life Education Council in its ap- : proach to the Government ! for project funding. Support was reaffirmed i yesterday by the community j services committee. •T One of the F.L.E.C. pro- i jects would educate unem- i ployed school-leavers in 1 family-life skills, such as i caring for young children. j Many unemployed youth would come from homes ■ that had provided an unsa- I
it'sfactory model of family ’life. ' Such a project would structure their time and help keep their mental and phys< ical abilities from deteriorating while they looked for jobs. .. They would learn skills such as toy-making, gardening, cocking, . woodwork for furniture making and house repairs, - and houshold budgating. They, could also be taught job-finding skills or smallbusiness techniques.
i Mrs Nancy Sutherland, a IF.L.E.C. co-president, said the City Council might be willing to administer Government funds for a pilot project. F.L.E.C. -has received a $lOOO establishment grant from the council, and has raised more than $40,000 locally through gifts and grants. It had been suggested that at least $lOO,OOO would be needed for F.L.E.C. to set up a permanent child and family centre in the city.
