Move on prison staff
PA Wellington
The Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) has agreed' to make an immediate approach to the Cabinet Committee on State Services .for extra staff to cover overtime worked in prisons. . This was the outcome if -a. two-hour meeting , at Parliament yesterday, when senior officials of the Public Services Association and representatives of .every penal institution in New Zealand
told Mr McLay that serious staff shortages were a potential danger to prison security. . Prison officers have imposed prisoner intake quota levels at some prisons, and intend to take additional industrial action in protest against what they see as the effect’ of the Government’s “sinking-lid” policy, under which staff ceilings are progressively lowered in non-commerical Government departments.
