Mrs Thomas had come to Wellington for her granddaughter’s wedding.
On Saturday she went with her son’s family to , their bach at Otaihanga and during an afternoon walk along the beach felt tired and sat down to rest while the others went on. When they returned soon after, she had disappeared. After an unsuccessful search police were called and a full-scale search was mounted. Fifty men and n helicopt e r equipped with floodlights comhed the bush area behind the beach for five hours.
About 1 a.m. Mrs , Thomas walked out by herself. A taxi picked her up on a Paraparaumu Beach road about three miles from where she disappeared. She had wandered into the bush while waiting for her family and had been unable to find her way out.
