34 die in jail riot
NZPA Bangladesh, Khulna The Bangladesh police h?.ve stormed a jail at Khulna. 128 km south-west of Dacca, where prisoners holding 24 staff members hostage had begun fighting among themselves, ’authorities have said. At least 34 inmates died but all the hostages were freed, unhurt, they said. ’
District authorities said that when policemen forced their way into the jail to control the rioting they, found seven bodies. The' authorities said that 27 in-! jured prisoners had died) later. I Police sources said: that. 114 policemen, six firemen, and five jail workers were injured, some seriously. Some 900 inmates seized the jail on October 12 and took the hostages to back demands for quick disposal of the cases of prisoners awaiting trial, unofficial sources said. The police commissioner of Khulna said the policemen fired 67 rounds of tear-gas shells and 23 rounds Of rubber bullets, but used no firearms.
