Social workers upset
Christchurch • . social workers .have rejected a salary increase' of 0,5 per cent offered b} 1 the -State Services Commission ■; .arid' have resolved to' ’support any call for direct action from the advisory panel of the Public \ Service Association.
About 90 social workers attended a lunch-time meeting to discuss the offer yesterday. Social workers met in other centres, too. ■ The staff work in the Justice, Social Welfare, and Maori Affairs departments, and for the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
Earlier this - month, officers of the Justice and Social Welfare departments who are members • of the P.S.A. had threatened to ban preparation of all court reports, but called the action off at the eleventh hour in response to the offer from the State Services Commission.
A P.S.A. spokesman said that the offer was regarded as an . insult and. fell ■ far short of what was- being claimed to maintain relativity . with vocational guidance officers.
Any increase would be additional to the annual general adjustment for all State employees.
