Abortion toll ‘a tragedy’
New Zealand’s. Roman Catholic bishops will dis-, tribute'- a statement this month comparing abortion figures with the road toll. For the year to March 31, 1980, 4093 abortions were reported. For the 1979 calendar year, road deaths totalled 654.
“The document is, of course, directed at catholics and will be distributed in parishes and catholic organisations .--throughout the country," said Archbishop Thomas Williams.' “However, we as- bishops hope that our support for the pro-life attitude as shown in our concern for mother and child alike will -reflect the views of others who, like us, are so greatly troubled by ' the growing ' attitude that ‘a pregnancy need be nothing more than an easily disposable nuisance and that parenthood’ is primarily a burden’.”
The bishops' say that New Zealanders readily condemn the road toll as unnecessary and irresponsible but the bishops describe the abortions as a greater tragedy in moral and spiritual terms.
